Sloppy Joes

Delicious sloppy joes, perfect for any weeknight meal.


I love sloppy joes. This recipe isn’t really “sloppy” though. It’s thick and flavorful.  It’s perfect for kids. What kid doesn’t like something called sloppy joes? To make it even more “kid-friendly” serve the sloppy joes with potato chips. This is a perfect weeknight meal for kids and adults. The prep time is fast too, so if you have to do something you can make this fast. I’ve pre-cooked the beef a day before and it still tasted great. image

The soy sauce and brown sugar together makes it a little salty and a little sweet. If you don’t like that combo, you can cut down the brown sugar or omit as needed. It will still be a touch sweet because of the ketchup, but you won’t taste it. Yes, I did use gluten-free Soy sauce. Make sure you use GF soy sauce. Many people do not notice that there is gluten in soy sauce, and use it in sauces and meals. It always is sad when your favorite meal on a restaurant menu is almost gluten free but there is soy sauce in it.

Sloppy Joes


1-1/2 lb lean ground beef

1-1/4 cups ketchup

1/8 cup GF soy sauce

2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

1 tablespoon mustard

2 teaspoons brown sugar

1/4 teaspoon onion powder

Gluten Free buns, for serving



  1. Brown ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, about ten minutes.
  2. Whisk together ketchup, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, onion powder, and brown sugar in a medium bowl. Pour ketchup mixture over the beef and stir well. Simmer over low heat until thickened, about 25 minutes. Spoon over bun and serve.
